Dark Orbs are the Defect's ultimate scaling tool. Each Dark Orb gains damage equal to 6 + Focus at the end of every turn. Unlike Lightning and Frost, Dark Orbs don't do anything passively — they accumulate power. When evoked (either by channeling over your Orb limit or using Recursion/Dualcast), they deal ALL accumulated damage to the strongest enemy. The strategy is to channel a Dark Orb early, let it grow for several turns while you defend with Frost, then evoke it for a massive finishing blow. Loop makes Dark Orbs gain power twice per turn.

Act-by-Act Strategy
Act 1
Dark Orb is your key card but needs time to scale. Pick up Frost cards (Coolheaded, Cold Snap) to survive while your Dark Orb grows. Recursion lets you evoke and re-channel for repeated burst damage.
Act 2
Focus is critical — each point of Focus adds +1 damage per turn to your Dark Orb. Loop makes your first Orb trigger twice, doubling the growth rate. Manage Orb slots carefully to keep your Dark Orb alive.
Act 3
With high Focus and Loop, your Dark Orb grows by 10-15+ damage per turn. After 3-4 turns, it hits for 50-80 damage on evoke. Echo Form lets you double key plays. The build requires patience but delivers enormous payoffs.

Dark Orb Scaling is the Defect's best single-target damage build. Time your evokes for when damage is needed most. Against bosses with damage windows (like Ceremonial Beast's stun), save your Dark Orb evoke for the vulnerability phase. Always have Frost Orbs for defense while Dark grows.
